What is considered a foul ball in baseball?

In baseball, a foul ball is a batted ball that:

  • Lands outside the foul lines, which extend from home plate to first and third base.
  • Is caught by a fielder before it touches the ground.
  • Bounces into the stands before passing the first or third base bag.
  • Is hit on the fly and goes over the backstop, even if it is eventually caught.

Foul balls are not counted as strikes. However, if a batter hits three foul balls in a row, it is counted as a strikeout.

Exceptions:

  • A foul ball that is hit with two strikes is not counted as a strikeout.
  • A foul ball that is hit with the bases loaded is not counted as an out.
