What are the rules for a no-hitter?

A no-hitter is a baseball game in which a pitcher does not allow any hits to the opposing team. There are a few specific rules that must be followed for a no-hitter to be considered official.

  1. The pitcher must throw a complete game. This means that he must pitch all nine innings without being relieved by another pitcher.
  2. The pitcher cannot allow any hits. This includes any type of hit, such as a single, double, triple, or home run.
  3. The pitcher cannot allow any walks. A walk is when the pitcher throws four balls to a batter without recording an out.
  4. The pitcher cannot allow any hit batters. A hit batter is when the pitcher hits a batter with a pitch.
  5. The pitcher cannot allow any errors by his fielders. An error is when a fielder misplays a ball that would have otherwise been an out.

If a pitcher breaks any of these rules, then he will not be credited with a no-hitter. No-hitters are considered to be one of the most difficult feats in baseball to achieve, and they are celebrated by both the pitcher and the team.

  1. Can a pitcher be credited with a no-hitter if he gives up a walk? No
  2. Can a pitcher be credited with a no-hitter if his fielders make an error? No
  3. Can a no-hitter be broken up by a hit by pitch? No
  4. Can a no-hitter be broken up by a walk-off home run? Yes
