What numbers can a baseball player wear?

In baseball, the numbers that players can wear are regulated by the rules of the game. The numbers 00-99 are available for players to choose from, but there are some restrictions on which numbers can be worn by certain positions.

  • Pitchers and catchers can wear any number from 00-99.
  • Infielders (first base, second base, third base, and shortstop) can wear any number from 1-99, except for 00.
  • Outfielders can wear any number from 1-99, except for 00 and 0.

There are a few reasons for these restrictions. First, it helps to prevent confusion on the field. For example, if a pitcher and a catcher both wore the number 1, it would be difficult for the umpire to tell who was who. Second, it helps to identify players by their position. For example, a player wearing a number in the 10s is likely an infielder, while a player wearing a number in the 20s is likely an outfielder.

Of course, there are some exceptions to these rules. For example, some players have been granted permission to wear numbers that are not normally allowed for their position. Additionally, some teams have retired certain numbers in honor of former players.
