Bob Feller, nicknamed "Rapid Robert" is considered one of the hardest throwing pitchers in the history of baseball. He is widely credited as being one of the very first pitchers to develop a blazing fastball that was consistently clocked at over 100 mph. Feller's fastball was so overpowering that it was said to sound like a gunshot when it crossed the plate.
In 1940, he threw what was later calculated to be a 104.8 mph fastball in an exhibition game, a speed that would not be surpassed until the development of modern radar technology. Feller's fastball was not only fast, but it also had incredible movement, making it extremely difficult for batters to hit.
Throughout his career, Feller was known for his longevity and durability. He pitched for 18 seasons in the major leagues, winning 266 games and striking out 2,581 batters. Feller was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
