Bases and Outs per Inning

An inning in baseball consists of two halves: the top of the inning and the bottom of the inning. Each team bats once per inning.

  • Bases: There are four bases in baseball: home plate, first base, second base, and third base. The batter must hit the ball and run around all four bases in order to score a run.
  • Outs: An out occurs when a batter is:
    • Struck out by the pitcher
    • Caught by an infielder or outfielder after hitting a fly ball
    • Thrown out by a fielder after hitting a ground ball

Each team has three outs per inning. If a team gets three outs before the other team scores three runs, the inning is over.
