How did Sally Ride become an astronaut if she didn't have a degree?

Sally Ride was the first American woman to travel to space. She was also the youngest person to ever travel to space at the time. Ride was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1951. She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Physics and then went on to earn a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of California, San Diego.

After graduating from Stanford University, Ride worked as a research scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 1978, she was selected to be an astronaut by NASA. Ride made her first spaceflight in 1983 on the Space Shuttle Challenger. She went on to make a total of two spaceflights. Ride left NASA in 1987 and went on to work as a professor at the University of California, San Diego. She also served on the President's Commission on the Future of the United States Aerospace Industry. Ride died of pancreatic cancer in 2012.
