ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) has implemented a new rule, according to which if a tournament is stripped of its ranking points then the defending champion loses those points as well. Hence, Novak Djokovic, who won last year's Wimbledon, will see 2,000 points drop from his ranking.
How do the rankings work?
The ATP publishes rankings every Monday, based on a player's best 19 results from the past 52 weeks. Players earn ATP points based on their performances at various levels of tournaments, including Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000, ATP 500 and ATP 250.
How will Wimbledon affect the rankings?
Due to the exclusion of ranking points from Wimbledon, players will defend fewer points in 2023. This means that players with lower rankings have a better chance of moving up in the rankings, while those with higher rankings may see their positions drop significantly.
