How many merit badges can a Boy Scout earn at one time?

The Boy Scouts of America offers more than 130 meritbadges that cover a wide range of skills and interests, from traditional outdoor skills like camping and hiking to more contemporary topics like robotics and sustainability. While there is no limit to the number of badges a Scout can earn over the course of their Scouting career, there is a limit to how many they can earn at one time.

According to the Boy Scout Handbook, "A Scout may earn no more than five merit badges during any three-month period and no more than 24 badges in any 12-month period." This limit is in place to ensure that Scouts have the time to fully learn and develop the skills associated with each badge.
