Profile: John Locker 8

John Locker is an English clergyman and former first-class cricketer. One of cricket's most famous all-rounders, Locker holds the record for the most first-class runs scored by a player who primarily bowled. He is best remembered today for his nine-wicket haul for England at Lord's in 1962, which contributed to a victory over Australia in the First Test of the series.

Locker was born in 1945 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire. He played cricket for his village team as a child and was later educated at Lancing College, where he captained the cricket team. After leaving school, Locker played for Sussex Second XI before joining the Royal Air Force. He made his first-class debut for the RAF in 1963 and played for them until 1968.

In 1969, Locker joined Derbyshire, where he spent the majority of his career. He played for Derbyshire until 1981, captaining the team from 1974 to 1980. Locker was a prolific batsman and bowler. He scored over 30,000 first-class runs and took over 1,000 first-class wickets. He also played 12 Test matches for England, scoring 538 runs and taking 40 wickets.

After retiring from cricket, Locker became a clergyman. He was ordained in 1983 and served as rector of Eckington in Derbyshire until 1992. He then moved to Leicestershire, where he served as rector of Mountsorrel until 2001.

Locker is a popular and respected figure in the world of cricket. He is the author of several books on the game, including his autobiography, "The Parson and the Peacock".
