What is Blackfishing?

Blackfishing is a term used to describe the practice of non-Black people identifying as Black or using makeup, hairstyles, and clothing to appear Black for personal, professional, or social gain.

Blackfishing can manifest in various forms:

  • Physical appropriation: Using makeup and/or sunless tanning products to darken skin tone, wearing traditionally Black hairstyles (e.g., dreadlocks, braids), and accessorizing with African prints.
  • Cultural appropriation: Adopting Black vernacular, mannerisms, and cultural practices without understanding their historical context or the experiences of Black people.
  • Social media impersonation: Creating online profiles with Black avatars or posting images of oneself styled in a way that implies Black identity.

Why is Blackfishing problematic?

  • It perpetuates harmful stereotypes: Blackfishing reinforces the idea that Blackness is a costume or trend rather than an authentic identity.
  • It takes away opportunities from Black creators: By imitating Black culture, non-Black individuals can gain credibility, exposure, and profit that could otherwise have gone to genuine Black artists.
  • It erases the lived experiences of Black people: Blackfishing diminishes the unique experiences and challenges faced by actual Black individuals, which can lead to erasure and invisibility.
  1. Is it ever acceptable to wear Black hairstyles or clothing? Yes, if it is done with respect and appreciation of the cultural significance and without profiting from it.
  2. Can I be accused of Blackfishing if I am mixed-race? It depends on the context. If you are not predominantly Black and are actively trying to present yourself as Black, it may be considered Blackfishing.
  3. Is Blackfishing the same as cultural exchange? No. Cultural exchange involves sharing and learning about different cultures while respecting their origins.
  4. How can I avoid Blackfishing? Be mindful of your intentions, educate yourself about Black culture, and amplify Black voices instead of imitating them.
  5. What should I do if I see someone Blackfishing? Kindly call them out, educate them, and encourage them to use their platform to support Black creators.
