What are the Ad and Deuce Courts?
In badminton, the court is divided into two halves by a net. Each half is further divided into four quadrants: the left and right service courts, and the left and right hand courts. The ad court is the right-hand court when a player is serving from the right-hand side of the court. The deuce court is the left-hand court when a player is serving from the right-hand side of the court.
The ad and deuce courts are named after the terms used in scoring. When the score is tied at 14-14, 15-15, 20-20, or 24-24, the next point is called "ad." If the player who won the last point wins the next point, they win the set. If the other player wins the next point, the score is called "deuce." The next point after deuce is called "ad" again. The player who wins the ad point wins the set.
The ad and deuce courts are the most important parts of the court in a close match. Players will often try to serve to the ad court to gain an advantage on the serve. They will also try to hit the shuttlecock to the ad court when they are in a winning position.
