What are the rules of tennis?
Tennis is a racquet sport played between two opponents (singles) or two pairs of opponents (doubles). The object of the game is to score points by hitting a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over a net and into the opponent's court.
Court:
- Rectangular, 78 feet long by 27 feet wide (singles) or 36 feet wide (doubles)
- Divided in half by a net suspended 3 feet high at the ends and 3.5 feet high in the middle
Equipment:
- Racquet: Made of wood, metal, or graphite
- Ball: Hollow rubber ball covered with felt
Gameplay:
- The game starts with a serve, where one player hits the ball diagonally into the opponent's service court
- Opponents take turns hitting the ball back and forth over the net until one player fails to return it or hits it out of bounds
- Points are scored when the opponent fails to return the ball or hits it into the net
- A game is won when one player reaches 4 points with a lead of at least 2 points
- A set is won when one player wins 6 games with a lead of at least 2 games
- A match is won when one player wins 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 5 sets
Additional Rules:
- The ball must bounce once in each player's court before it can be hit
- Players cannot touch the net or cross over into the opponent's court
- If the ball hits the net during a volley, it is considered a "let" and the point is replayed
