What is the difference between arthropods and Mollusca?

Arthropods and Mollusca are two of the largest and most diverse groups of animals on the planet. They both have segmented bodies, but there are a number of key differences between them.

Body structure

Arthropods have a hard exoskeleton made of chitin, while Mollusca have a soft body covered by a shell or mantle. Arthropods have jointed legs, while Mollusca have a muscular foot that they use for locomotion.

Circulatory system

Arthropods have an open circulatory system, while Mollusca have a closed circulatory system. In an open circulatory system, blood is pumped through the body in a series of sinuses, while in a closed circulatory system, blood is pumped through vessels.

Nervous system

Arthropods have a ventral nerve cord, while Mollusca have a dorsal nerve cord. The ventral nerve cord is located on the underside of the body, while the dorsal nerve cord is located on the top of the body.

Reproduction

Arthropods reproduce sexually, while Mollusca can reproduce both sexually and asexually. Asexual reproduction occurs when a new individual is formed from a fragment of an existing individual.

Examples

Arthropods include insects, spiders, crustaceans, and myriapods. Mollusca include snails, clams, oysters, and squid.

  • What is the difference between an exoskeleton and an endoskeleton? An exoskeleton is a hard outer shell, while an endoskeleton is an internal skeleton.
  • What is the function of the mantle in Mollusca? The mantle is a protective layer of tissue that covers the body and secretes the shell.
  • Why do arthropods have jointed legs? Jointed legs allow arthropods to move quickly and easily.
  • What is the difference between a closed circulatory system and an open circulatory system? In a closed circulatory system, blood is pumped through vessels, while in an open circulatory system, blood is pumped through sinuses.
  • How do Mollusca reproduce asexually? Mollusca can reproduce asexually by forming new individuals from fragments of their bodies.
