How many ribs are there in the body?

The human body has 24 ribs, divided into two sets of 12. The upper seven ribs on each side are called true ribs, because they attach directly to the breastbone (sternum). The next five are called false ribs, because they do not directly attach to the breastbone. The last two ribs on each side are called floating ribs, because they do not attach to the breastbone or to any other ribs.

The ribs play an important role in protecting the organs in the chest cavity, including the heart, lungs, and liver. They also help to support the spine and provide attachment for the muscles of the chest and back.
