What are the bones that form the human hand?
The hand is a complex structure made up of 27 bones, which are grouped into three sections: the carpal bones, the metacarpal bones, and the phalanges.
Carpal bones
The carpus is made up of eight small bones arranged in two rows. The proximal row, located closest to the forearm, includes the scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, and pisiform bones. The distal row, located closer to the fingers, includes the trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, and hamate bones.
Metacarpal bones
The metacarpals are five long bones that form the palm of the hand. They are numbered I through V, with the first metacarpal being the thumb and the fifth metacarpal being the little finger.
Phalanges
The phalanges are the 14 bones that form the fingers and thumb. Each finger has three phalanges: the proximal phalanx, the middle phalanx, and the distal phalanx. The thumb has only two phalanges: the proximal phalanx and the distal phalanx.
