Titanoboa is known from a single species, Titanoboa cerrejonensis, which was first described in 2009. The holotype specimen of T. cerrejonensis is a partial skeleton that was found in the Cerrejón coal mine in Colombia. The skeleton is missing the skull, but the rest of the body is well-preserved.
Titanoboa was a constrictor snake, meaning that it killed its prey by wrapping around it and squeezing it to death. It is believed that Titanoboa fed on large animals such as crocodiles, turtles, and mammals.
