Who was Günther von Kluge?
Günther von Kluge was a German field marshal during World War II. He was born in Posen, Prussia (now Poznań, Poland) on October 8, 1882. He joined the German Army in 1901 and served in the First World War. After the war, he remained in the army and rose through the ranks.
In 1939, Kluge was appointed commander of the 4th Army. He led the army in the invasion of Poland and the Battle of France. In 1941, he was appointed commander of Army Group Center. He led the army group in the invasion of the Soviet Union.
Kluge was a highly skilled and experienced commander. He was known for his intelligence, his attention to detail, and his ability to motivate his troops. However, he was also known for his caution and his reluctance to take risks.
In 1943, Kluge was relieved of his command after he failed to prevent the Soviet Red Army from breaking through his lines at the Battle of Kursk. He was later arrested by the Gestapo and implicated in the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler. He was executed on August 19, 1944.
