How to Heel Slide a Snowboard

Heel slides are intermediate snowboard tricks that involve sliding your heel edge along a feature while keeping your toes up, a move that can really add style to your riding.

Step 1: Approach the Feature

First, choose a safe feature to hit, such as a rail or box. Approach the feature with a little speed and a slightly toeside edge angle.

Step 2: Ollie and Jump

When you hit the feature, pop an ollie and jump as usual. However, instead of landing flat-based, keep your nose slightly higher than your tail.

Step 3: Slide Your Heel Edge

As you jump onto the feature, quickly slide your heel edge along the top of the rail or box. Aim to keep your knees bent and your body balanced over the board.

Step 4: Control Your Slide

Control the length of your slide by adjusting the angle of your heel edge. Leaning back will slow you down, while leaning forward will speed you up.

Step 5: Disengage and Land

When you want to disengage, simply straighten out your legs and come back up to flat-based. Time it right so that you land smoothly on your toe edge.

Common Questions:

  • How do I avoid catching an edge? Keep your weight centered over the board and bend your knees to absorb any vibrations.
  • How can I make my heel slides longer? Practice and find the right balance point to keep your edge engaged.
  • How do I step off a rail after a heel slide? Stay on your heel edge and jump off with your toes pointed towards the landing.
  • What's the difference between heel and toeside slides? Heel slides are done with the heel edge of your board, while toeside slides are done with the toe edge.
  • How do I progress from heel slides to other tricks? Once you've mastered heel slides, you can try more advanced tricks like backside and frontside boardslides.
