How do Rock Climbers Get Their Anchors Back?

Rock climbers use anchors to secure themselves to the rock wall while climbing. Anchors can be placed in a variety of ways, depending on the type of rock and the climber's needs. Retrieval anchors are used to remove existing anchors that are no longer needed.

Anchors are typically made of metal or nylon and are attached to the rock wall using a variety of methods, including:

  • Expansion bolts: These are the most common type of anchor, which expand inside the rock to create a secure hold.
  • Nuts: These are threaded nuts that are placed on existing protrusions on the rock.
  • Camming devices: These are spring-loaded devices that cam against the rock to create a secure hold.

When a climber reaches the top of a climb, they will often need to remove their anchors before rappelling down, as it is not safe to leave them behind. This is where retrieval anchors come in.

Retrieval anchors are typically placed in a parallel or opposite direction of the line of force on the anchor you want to remove. Once you have placed your retrieval anchor, you can attach it to the anchor you want to remove and pull it out using a rope or prussik. Once the anchor is removed, you can rappel down the route as normal.

  • Can I use any anchor to retrieve another anchor? No, you should use a dedicated retrieval anchor that is designed for the specific anchor you are trying to remove.
  • How do I know if an anchor is safe to remove? You should only remove an anchor if you are confident that it is no longer needed and that you can do so safely.
  • What if I can't remove an anchor? If you are unable to remove an anchor, you can leave it in place or you can cut it off using a hacksaw.
  • Are there any special tools I need to remove anchors? You will need a nut key, a carabiner, and a rope or prussik.
  • How do I attach a retrieval anchor to the anchor I want to remove? You can attach a retrieval anchor to the anchor you want to remove using a carabiner or a prussik knot.
