The United States has a long and storied history in the Olympic Games, having participated in every Summer and Winter Games since their inception in 1896 and 1924, respectively. The country has been the overall medal leader in 26 of the 32 Summer Games and 10 of the 24 Winter Games. However, there have been a few occasions where the US has finished second or third in the overall medal standings.

In the 1984 Summer Olympics, the US returned to the Games and finished second in the overall medal standings, behind the Soviet Union. The US also finished second in the overall medal standings in the 1992 Summer Olympics, behind the Unified Team.
In the 2008 Summer Olympics, the US finished third in the overall medal standings, behind China and Great Britain. It was the first time since 1936 that the US had not finished first or second in the overall medal standings.
In the 2012 Summer Olympics, the US finished second in the overall medal standings, behind China.
