Can my hot water heater still be on when the main water is shut off?
If your hot water heater is gas-powered, it can still operate even when the main water supply is turned off. However, electric water heaters require a constant water flow to prevent overheating and potential damage. If the main water supply is shut off, you should turn off the circuit breaker or disconnect the power supply to the electric water heater.
Before turning the main water supply back on, make sure all faucets and appliances that use water are turned off to prevent sudden pressure surges that could damage the water heater or plumbing system.
