How Many Miles per Hour Can You Personally Run?

Your personal running speed is influenced by several factors, including age, gender, fitness level, and training experience. Generally, the average mile pace for runners ranges from 9:00 to 12:00 minutes per mile, equating to speeds of approximately 5.0 to 6.7 miles per hour (8.0 to 10.8 kilometers per hour).

However, elite runners, such as marathoners and sprinters, can achieve much higher speeds. Marathoners typically maintain a pace between 4:30 to 6:00 minutes per mile (13.3 to 10.0 miles per hour), while sprinters can reach speeds exceeding 20 miles per hour (32 kilometers per hour) over shorter distances.

To determine your own personal running speed, the best method is to conduct a timed mile run. Record the time it takes you to complete one mile and use the following formula to calculate your average pace:

Average Pace (min/mile) = Time (seconds) ÷ 60

Once you know your average pace, you can easily calculate your running speed in miles per hour using the following formula:

Speed (mph) = 60 ÷ Average Pace (min/mile)
