What's Something About Star Trek: The Next Generation That Always Irked You?
As a lifelong Trekkie, I've always enjoyed Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG). But even the most devoted fans have their nitpicks. Here's something that always irked me about the show:
The lack of diversity among the senior staff.
In a time when the Federation was supposedly a beacon of diversity and inclusion, it's strange that the Enterprise's senior staff was so overwhelmingly white and male. Of the seven main characters, only one was a woman (Deanna Troi) and only one was non-white (Geordi La Forge). Even in the later seasons, when Worf joined the crew, the balance was still heavily skewed.
This lack of diversity was especially disappointing given that TNG was created in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a time when other TV shows were starting to embrace more diverse casting. It would have been great to see TNG set an example by having a more inclusive crew.
Of course, I still love TNG despite its flaws. But I can't help but wonder what it could have been if it had been more representative of the Federation's ideals.
