My cycling fish tank has a bit of foam and there's some brown substance in my substrate. Is it normal, and what is it?

It is normal to have a bit of foam and a brown substance in your substrate during the cycling process of a new fish tank.

Foam

Foam is caused by the release of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the substrate, rocks, and wood in your tank. As the bacteria in your filter colonize and begin to break down this DOM, it can create foam. This is a normal part of the cycling process and will usually go away within a few weeks.

Brown substance

The brown substance in your substrate is most likely a biofilm. Biofilm is a community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms that forms on surfaces in your tank, including the substrate. It is also a normal part of the cycling process and will help to establish a healthy ecosystem in your tank.

Is it harmful?

No, both foam and biofilm are not harmful to your fish. In fact, biofilm can be beneficial as it provides a food source for your fish and helps to break down waste.

How to remove foam and biofilm

If you find that the foam or biofilm is excessive, you can remove it by physically cleaning your tank. Use a gravel vacuum to clean the substrate and a sponge to clean the walls of your tank. You can also use a chemical filter to help remove excess DOM from the water.

  1. Why is my fish tank cloudy during cycling? (Answer: This is caused by a bloom of beneficial bacteria.)
  2. How long does it take for a fish tank to cycle? (Answer: It typically takes 4-8 weeks.)
  3. What is the nitrogen cycle? (Answer: It is the process by which harmful ammonia and nitrite are converted into harmless nitrate by beneficial bacteria.)
  4. What are the signs that my fish tank is cycled? (Answer: Clear water, no ammonia or nitrite, and a healthy biofilm.)
  5. How often should I clean my fish tank during cycling? (Answer: Only clean it if the foam or biofilm becomes excessive.)
