Who is the best American cyclist of all time?

There's no doubt that Lance Armstrong is the most famous American cyclist of all time. He won the Tour de France seven times, more than any other rider in history. However, his legacy has been tarnished by his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs.

So, if not Armstrong, who is the best American cyclist of all time? There are a number of contenders, including:

  • Greg LeMond: LeMond won the Tour de France in 1986 and 1989. He is also the only American to have won the UCI Road World Championships.
  • Tyler Hamilton: Hamilton won the gold medal in the time trial at the 2004 Athens Olympics. He also finished second in the Tour de France in 2003.
  • George Hincapie: Hincapie was a domestique for Armstrong on the US Postal Service team. He won the Tour of Flanders in 2001 and has also finished on the podium in the Tour de France four times.
  • Tejay van Garderen: Van Garderen is a rising star in the American cycling scene. He won the Tour of California in 2013 and has also finished on the podium in the Tour de France.

It's difficult to say definitively who is the best American cyclist of all time. All of the riders on this list have achieved great things. However, if I had to pick one rider, I would choose Greg LeMond. He was a pioneer for American cycling and he achieved great success on the world stage.
