Has Anyone Ever Been Killed Diving at the Olympics?

Diving at the Olympics is a dangerous sport, but there hasn't been a fatality in over 100 years. The last death occurred in 1912 when Swedish diver Erik Adlerz drowned during the high diving event.

Since then, there have been several near misses. In 2004, Australian diver Matthew Helm hit his head on the diving board during a preliminary round and was knocked unconscious. He was revived and taken to the hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

In 2008, Chinese diver Zhou Luxin nearly drowned after hitting the water at an awkward angle during a training session. She was pulled from the pool unconscious and was given CPR. She made a full recovery, but the incident was a reminder of the risks involved in diving.

Despite these close calls, diving remains a relatively safe sport. The rules and regulations put in place by the International Swimming Federation (FINA) have helped to minimize the risk of accidents.
