I have an area which will absolutely not grow grass. Is there anything that I can plant to cover the bare spots?

The first step is to determine why the grass is not growing in that particular area. Could it be that the soil is too compacted resulting in poor drainage? Is there too little sunlight? Too much shade? Once you have identified the problem, you can start to look for solutions.

For example, if the area is too shady, you could plant shade-tolerant groundcovers such as Hostas, Ajuga, or ferns. If the soil is too compacted, you could try aerating it with a garden fork or tiller. If the area is too wet, you could install a French drain to help remove excess water.

Once you have addressed the underlying problem, you can start to plant groundcovers to cover the bare spots. Some good choices for groundcovers that are relatively easy to grow include:

  • Creeping Jenny
  • Pachysandra
  • Vinca
  • Lamium
  • Ajuga

These groundcovers will quickly spread and fill in the bare spots, creating a lush, green carpet.

  • What are some other things I can do to improve the soil in my yard? Aerate the soil, add organic matter, such as compost or manure, and fertilize the soil regularly.
  • How often should I water my groundcovers? Water your groundcovers deeply and regularly, especially during hot, dry weather.
  • Do groundcovers need to be fertilized? Yes, fertilize your groundcovers regularly to keep them healthy and looking their best.
  • Can I plant groundcovers in the spring or fall? Yes, you can plant groundcovers in the spring or fall.
  • How do I care for groundcovers? Water regularly, fertilize occasionally, and remove any weeds that may pop up.
