If I Harvest the Sweet Corn from the Plant, Is the Plant Dead or Will It Grow Corn Again?

After harvesting the sweet corn from a plant, the plant will not produce another ear of corn on the same stalk. Sweet corn is a type of monoecious plant that produces both male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers are located at the top of the stalk and produce pollen, while the female flowers are located lower down and produce ears of corn. Once the female flowers are pollinated by the pollen from the male flowers, they will mature into ears of corn. Harvesting the mature ears of corn does not remove all of the female flowers from the plant, so the plant is not "dead." However, the remaining female flowers will not develop into additional ears of corn because they have not been pollinated.

In some cases, new stalks may grow from the base of the sweet corn plant, but these new stalks will not produce corn until they mature and develop their own male and female flowers. Therefore, if you want to continue harvesting sweet corn from your plant, you should allow the new stalks to grow and mature.
