Why is my pothos not developing nodes on the stems I want to propagate but can’t if there’s no nodes to grow roots from? What gives?

Pothos plants are known for their easy propagation, but sometimes, you may find yourself with a stem that doesn't seem to be developing any nodes. Nodes are the small, swollen areas on the stem where roots can form. Without nodes, it's impossible to propagate the plant.

So, what gives? Why isn't your pothos developing nodes? Here are a few possible reasons:

  • The stem is too young. Nodes typically develop on mature stems. If your stem is still young and green, it may not have developed any nodes yet. Give it some time to grow and mature, and then try propagating it again.
  • The stem is not getting enough light. Nodes need light to develop. If your pothos is not getting enough light, it may not be able to produce nodes. Move the plant to a brighter location, and see if that helps.
  • The stem is damaged. If the stem is damaged, it may not be able to develop nodes. Inspect the stem for any signs of damage, such as cuts, bruises, or insect damage. If you find any damage, remove the damaged section of the stem and try again.

If you've tried all of the above and your pothos still isn't developing nodes, you may need to try a different propagation method. Pothos can also be propagated by air layering or by division.

  • Can I propagate pothos from a stem with no nodes? No, you cannot propagate pothos from a stem with no nodes.
  • How long does it take for pothos nodes to develop? Nodes typically develop within a few weeks.
  • What are the ideal conditions for pothos propagation? Pothos should be propagated in warm, humid conditions with bright indirect light.
  • Can I propagate pothos in water? Yes, you can propagate pothos in water.
  • How do I propagate pothos by air layering? Air layering involves wounding a stem and wrapping it in moist sphagnum moss.
