What is a hit called in fencing
In fencing, a hit is called a "touch". A touch is awarded when the tip of the weapon touches the valid target area of the opponent's body. The valid target area is the torso, the mask, and the back of the head.
There are three types of touches:
- Point-in-line: The tip of the weapon hits the opponent's target area directly in front of the fencer.
- Point-in-time: The tip of the weapon hits the opponent's target area at the same time as the opponent's weapon hits the fencer's target area.
- Remise: The fencer hits the opponent's target area immediately after parrying the opponent's attack.
Touches are awarded by the referee, who raises their arm and calls out "Touch!" The fencer who receives the touch is penalized by losing a point.
