How good of a boxer was Primo Carnera?

Primo Carnera was an Italian professional boxer who held the world heavyweight title from 1933 to 1934. Nicknamed the "Ambling Alp", he was one of the largest boxers in history, standing at 6 ft 6 in (1.98 m) and weighing over 260 lb (118 kg).

Carnera's boxing career began in 1928, and he quickly rose through the ranks, winning his first 29 fights. In 1933, he challenged Jack Sharkey for the world heavyweight title and won in a controversial 6-round decision. Carnera successfully defended his title once against Ernie Schaaf, but lost it to Max Baer in 1934.

Despite his size and power, Carnera was not a particularly skilled boxer. He was slow, had poor footwork, and lacked punching power. He was also known for his susceptibility to cuts and knockouts. After losing his title, Carnera's career declined, and he retired in 1943 with a record of 89 wins (72 by knockout), 14 losses, and 1 draw.

Carnera's legacy is mixed. He was a popular figure in his time, but was never considered one of the great heavyweights. His lack of skill and susceptibility to knockouts prevented him from reaching his full potential.
