How is a professional boxing match scored?

In professional boxing, fights are scored by three judges sitting at ringside. Each judge scores the fight round by round, awarding points to the fighter they believe won the round. The fighter with the highest total score at the end of the fight is declared the winner.

Criteria for scoring rounds:

  • Effective punching: Judges award points for clean, hard punches that land on the opponent's head or body.
  • Aggression: Judges favor fighters who actively engage in the fight and attempt to land punches.
  • Defense: Judges award points to fighters who effectively block or evade their opponent's punches and avoid getting hit.
  • Ring generalship: Judges evaluate fighters' ability to control the pace and distance of the fight, and to impose their game plan on their opponent.
  • Knockdowns: A knockdown is worth 10 points and is awarded when a fighter is knocked to the canvas and cannot rise before the referee counts to 10.

Scoring system:

  • Each judge scores each round on a 10-point must system.
  • The winner of the round receives 10 points, while the loser receives 9 points or less.
  • In the event of a draw, both fighters receive 10 points.

Winning the fight:

  • The fighter with the highest total score at the end of the fight is declared the winner by unanimous decision, split decision, or majority decision.
  • In the event of a draw, the scores of the three judges are added together and the fighter with the highest total score is declared the winner.
