When did Joe Louis start boxing and when did he retire from it?

Joe Louis, born Joseph Louis Barrow on May 13, 1914, in Lafayette, Alabama, began his boxing career at the age of 20. He had his first professional fight on July 4, 1934, against Jack Kracken in Chicago, Illinois. Louis won the fight by knockout in the first round.

Over the next 12 years, Louis went on to become one of the greatest boxers of all time. He won the world heavyweight championship in 1937 and defended it 25 times, a record that still stands today. Louis retired from boxing on March 1, 1949, after losing to Rocky Marciano in the eighth round of their fight.
