In Golf, If the Ball Goes Into the Hole But Bounces Back Out, Does It Still Count?

In the game of golf, the objective is to hit the ball into a series of holes on the course using as few strokes as possible. Once the ball is hit, it will travel along the ground or through the air until it either:

  • Lands in the hole and stays there
  • Rolls past the hole
  • Bounces off the lip of the hole and comes back out

If the ball lands in the hole and stays there, the player has successfully completed the hole. However, if the ball bounces off the lip of the hole and comes back out, the player must continue to play until the ball is finally in the hole.

Even though the ball bounced back out of the hole, it still counts as a shot. The player must continue to play from where the ball landed after it bounced out. The number of strokes taken to get the ball into the hole is what determines the player's score for that hole.

  • Does the ball have to completely disappear into the hole to count? No, the ball only needs to come to rest in the hole.
  • What happens if the ball hits the flagstick and bounces out? The ball is still considered to be in the hole if it hits the flagstick and bounces out.
  • What if the ball rolls past the hole and then bounces back in? The ball is still considered to be in the hole if it rolls past and then bounces back in.
  • What happens if the ball bounces out of the hole after it has been holed? The ball is still considered to be holed and the player has completed the hole.
  • Is there a penalty if the ball bounces out of the hole? No, there is no penalty if the ball bounces out of the hole.
