How is Scoring Done in Golf?

Golf scoring is based on the number of strokes it takes a player to complete each hole on the course. The goal is to get the ball into the hole with the fewest possible strokes. The total number of strokes for all 18 holes is a player's score.

Par: Each hole has a designated par, which is the number of strokes a skilled golfer should take to complete the hole. Typically, par is set at 3, 4, or 5.

Bogey, Double Bogey, Triple Bogey: If a player takes one stroke more than par, it's called a bogey. Two strokes over par is a double bogey, and three strokes over par is a triple bogey.

Birdie, Eagle, Albatross: Conversely, if a player takes one stroke fewer than par, it's called a birdie. Two strokes fewer is an eagle, and three strokes fewer is an albatross.

Scoring Terms:

  • Ace: A hole-in-one, when the tee shot goes straight into the hole.
  • Water hazard: A penalty stroke is incurred if the ball lands in a water hazard, such as a lake or pond.
  • Out of bounds: A penalty stroke is incurred if the ball goes out of bounds (usually indicated by white stakes).
  • Putt: A shot on the green, usually close to the hole.

Additional Scoring Rules:

  • The player with the lowest total score after all 18 holes wins the game.
  • If multiple players tie after the full round, there may be a playoff to determine the winner.
  • In tournaments, players can earn bonus points based on their performance in relation to par.
