How Many Referees Are in Football?
In football, the number of referees on the field depends on the level of the match.
Youth and Amateur matches typically have a single referee who is responsible for controlling the match within the field of play, and two assistant referees (also known as linesmen) who are responsible for making offside decisions and indicating throw-ins and corner kicks.
Professional matches have a team of four officials:
- A referee who is responsible for overall control of the match and making decisions on fouls, offsides, and other infringements.
- Two assistant referees who help the referee to make offside decisions and indicate throw-ins and corner kicks.
- A fourth official who assists the referee by displaying the time added on at the end of each half and indicating player substitutions.
In some cases, professional matches may also have a video assistant referee (VAR) who can review controversial decisions and advise the referee accordingly.
