Why do they call it a Mike linebacker?

A "Mike" linebacker is the middle linebacker in a 4-3 defense. The term originated in the 1970s, when the Miami Dolphins had a standout middle linebacker named Nick Buoniconti. Buoniconti's nickname was "The Chairman of the Board," and his jersey number was 58.

When other teams began using a similar defensive formation, they often referred to their middle linebacker as the "Mike," in honor of Buoniconti. The term has stuck ever since, and is now used by teams throughout the NFL.
