Why are NFL games played on 3 specific days (Thursday, Sunday, and Monday) and not the whole week?

The NFL season consists of 17 games over 18 weeks. Each team plays one game per week, with the exception of teams that play on Thursday Night Football. There are several reasons why NFL games are only played on specific days:

  • Scheduling: Playing games on a limited number of days allows the NFL to create a balanced schedule for all 32 teams. This ensures that each team has a fair chance of playing each other, both home and away, over the course of the season.

  • Player rest and recovery: NFL games are physically demanding, and players need time to rest and recover. By limiting games to three days per week, the NFL gives players an opportunity to properly prepare for their next game.

  • Television ratings: Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, and Monday Night Football are all popular television events. By scheduling games on these specific days, the NFL can maximize its TV ratings and generate revenue.

  • Fan engagement: Playing games on different days of the week allows fans to plan their weekends around NFL games. This increases fan engagement and helps to create a sense of community among fans.

  • National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) agreement: The NFLPA is the union that represents NFL players. As part of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the NFL and the NFLPA, players are given specific days off each week. This limits the number of days that games can be played.

  • Why is Thursday Night Football played on a weekday? To generate additional television revenue and to provide fans with another night of NFL action.
  • Why is Monday Night Football played on a Monday? To allow for more time for player rest and recovery before the next week's games.
  • Why are there only 17 regular season games? To allow for a longer preseason and postseason, as well as to give players more time to rest and recover.
  • Why are NFL games typically played in the afternoon? To accommodate the majority of fans who are not able to attend night games.
  • Why are NFL games blacked out in certain areas? To protect local television markets and to encourage fans to attend games in person.
