Why did Warren Moon not play quarterback earlier in his career

Warren Moon is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history. He played in the NFL for 17 seasons, earning nine Pro Bowl selections and four All-Pro selections. However, Moon did not start playing quarterback until he was 27 years old.

There are a few reasons why Moon did not play quarterback earlier in his career. First, he was a talented running back and wide receiver in college. He led the University of Washington to the Rose Bowl in 1977 and was named the team's MVP.

Second, Moon was not recruited by any major college football programs as a quarterback. He was considered too small and not athletic enough to play the position.

Third, Moon was not drafted by any NFL teams as a quarterback. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings as a running back in 1978.

Moon's career took a turn in 1984 when he was traded to the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. The Eskimos' head coach, Hugh Campbell, converted Moon to quarterback. Moon quickly became one of the most dominant quarterbacks in the CFL, winning five consecutive Grey Cups.

In 1990, Moon signed with the Houston Oilers of the NFL. He immediately became one of the top quarterbacks in the league, leading the Oilers to the AFC Championship Game in 1991 and 1993.

Moon retired from the NFL in 2000. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.
