How Racist is St Louis?

St. Louis, a city with a complex and checkered history, has been at the center of debates surrounding racism and its impact on the community. The city has been ranked as one of the most segregated in the United States, with deep racial disparities in areas such as income, education, and health.

A 2019 study by the University of Missouri found that Black residents in St. Louis earn less than half the median income of White residents. The Black infant mortality rate is nearly triple that of White infants, and the life expectancy for Black residents is five years shorter than that of White residents.

These disparities are not only reflected in economic and health outcomes, but also in the city's criminal justice system. A 2018 report by the American Civil Liberties Union found that Black people in St. Louis are arrested at a rate nearly four times higher than White people, and they are more likely to be convicted and sentenced to longer prison terms.

While St. Louis has made efforts to address racial disparities, such as the creation of the St. Louis Police Department's Civilian Oversight Board, progress has been slow and uneven. The city remains a racially divided community, with a long way to go in addressing its history of racism and its current impact on the lives of Black residents.
