Why is it called the Stanley Cup?

The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy awarded annually to the winner of the National Hockey League (NHL) playoffs. It is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada from 1888 to 1893.

In 1892, Lord Stanley donated the trophy to the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada (AHAC), which was the governing body of ice hockey in Canada at the time. The trophy was originally called the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup" and was awarded to the winner of the AHAC championship.

In 1910, the AHAC merged with the National Hockey Association (NHA) to form the NHL. The Stanley Cup was then awarded to the winner of the NHL playoffs.

The Stanley Cup is one of the most prestigious trophies in sports. It is a symbol of excellence and achievement in ice hockey.
