How Far Is a Penalty Stroke Hit in Hockey?
A penalty stroke in hockey is a shot awarded to an attacking team as a result of a specific penalty being committed by the defending team. It is considered a major penalty and is taken from the penalty stroke mark, which is 6 yards from the center of the goal.
The penalty stroke is taken by the player who was fouled, or by any other player designated by the team captain. The player taking the stroke has only one attempt to score, and must shoot before 10 seconds have elapsed.
The goalkeeper is allowed to move anywhere within the goal area to defend the shot, but cannot leave the area. The goalkeeper must face the shooter, and cannot touch or impede the stroke with his or her body or stick.
If the player scores, the goal counts as a regular goal. If the player misses, the game continues as normal.
