In Hockey What is PS?

Penalty Shot (PS) is a type of penalty in ice hockey that is awarded when a player is denied a clear scoring opportunity due to a foul by an opposing player. It is the most severe penalty in the sport, as it gives the player who was fouled a chance to score a goal without any defenders between them and the net.

A penalty shot is awarded when a player is:

  • denied a clear scoring opportunity due to a foul by an opposing player
  • tripped, hooked, slashed, or otherwise impeded by an opposing player
  • interfered with by an opposing player while in possession of the puck in the attacking zone

Once a penalty shot is awarded, the following procedure is followed:

  1. The player who was fouled is given the puck at the center of the ice, 15 feet from the opposing goal net.
  2. The player then has 30 seconds to skate towards the net and take a shot.
  3. No defenders are allowed to block the player's path to the net.
  4. If the player scores a goal, the goal counts. If the player misses the net, the shot is considered a failure.
