What is Icing the Puck in Hockey?

Icing is a minor penalty in ice hockey that occurs when a defending player shoots the puck from their own half of the ice across the opponent's goal line without it being touched by another player. The purpose of the rule is to prevent a team from delaying the game by repeatedly shooting the puck into the opponent's zone to avoid having to defend in their own zone.

Icing can only be called if all of the following conditions are met:

  • The puck is shot from behind the defending team's blue line.
  • The puck crosses the opponent's goal line.
  • The puck is not touched by another player before crossing the goal line.

If icing is called, the face-off will be held at the face-off spot nearest to the defending team's goal. The team that committed the icing violation will lose possession of the puck.
