The first female hockey player from India to compete in the Olympics was Sumrai Tete. She represented India at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where the Indian team finished fourth. Tete was a defender and played in all five of India's matches at the Olympics. She was also a member of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1982 Asian Games. After retiring from playing, Tete became a coach and has worked with the Indian national team on several occasions.
