How do points work in NHL
In the National Hockey League (NHL), points are awarded to teams based on the outcomes of their games. A regulation win is worth 2 points, a win in overtime or a shootout is worth 1 point, and a loss in regulation or overtime is worth 0 points.
If a game is tied after regulation time, the game goes into a five-minute overtime period. If the game is still tied after overtime, the game goes to a shootout, in which each team takes turns attempting to score a goal. The team that scores the most goals in the shootout wins the game.
Points are important in the NHL because they determine which teams qualify for the playoffs. The top 8 teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs, and the teams are seeded based on their point totals. The team with the most points in each conference wins the Presidents' Trophy.
